Female surfers: Welcome in Bali

Back in September of 2008, the tourism website Smarter Travel featured an article called “Ten Fabulous Female-Friendly Destinations”. It’s a pretty lengthy (10 pages) piece, but Bali gets its own page, most of all due to the friendly scene for female surfers.

According to the article, for women, Bali is “more than just a place to hang out—it’s also a great place for women to learn ocean sports like surfing and stand-up paddling.”

Also, if you don’t want to wade through Smarter Travel’s 10 page magnum opus on female-friendly destinations, check out this recent summary from Filipino GMA News: Top women-friendly destinations around the world, which only weighs in at 1 page.

Here’s another recent article called “One day bed at a time”, from the Sydney Morning Herald, which may appeal to some aspiring female surfers who’d like to mix a bit (or a lot) of yoga, spa treatments and cooking classes into their trip to Bali. According to the author, it all sounds a bit too much to cram into a relaxing holiday. Probably best to just stick with learning to surf and then doing a bit of chilling out and exploring the island in your free time, in my humble opinion.

Not to be out done in terms of top 10 lists, AskMen.com – you know that incisive, paragon of high brow journalism aka “men’s lifestyle portal” – has a top 10 list of female surfers. At least they don’t rate each of them on a scale of 1 to 10. As you can imagine it’s basically a fluff piece, but there are some serious female surfers in that list. Well I guess all of them are serious, but I preferred Surfer Today’s “The most influential female surfers of all time” article, but maybe that’s just the bespectacled historian in me.

Anyway, calling all female surfers: come to Bali!
