Could two surfers have beaten Garrett McNamara’s big wave surfing record? Brazilian surfer Carlos Burle, along with Briton Andrew Cotton, may have logged a new big wave record into the books when he braved the waves at Nazaré, Portugal. Who will hold the new big wave record? Will McNamara’s previous feat of 78ft (23.8m) stand? Nazaré is known for its big waves. It’s where McNamara set his previous records so it’s established itself as the surf spot for extreme big wave surfing. After the recent storm known as Saint Jude passed over the UK and parts of Western Europe, you can imagine that those waves were even bigger. Whoever would want to surf them has more than a desire to hold a new big wave record – they have a death wish. From the Guardian:
Cotton, from Devon, and Burle are now waiting to see if one of them will be crowned champion, as experts measure the height of their respective waves. The first images, seen on the Surfer Today website, suggest either one of them may have gone over the current record, set in the same spot in November 2011 by American Garrett McNamara.
Though in a sense competitors, these three big wave surfers (Cotton, Burle and McNamara) are working together, helping each other on their death-defying mission. It was Cotton who towed McNamara out at Nazaré via jetski when he set his world record in November 2011. This time McNamara pulled Cotton out in what may turn out to be his new big wave record run. But then again it could be Burle who holds the new big wave record, which some have speculated tops the previous one by a whopping 22 feet (6.7m). Check out this footage of Burle riding his colossal wave. It’s pretty shocking and I have to say that no one (not even they) should be attempting this kind of thing.
Let this record stand before they all drown.
