Padang barrelling lefts

Today we had another early start with surf time being 5.30am. We headed down to our local break Padang. As we arrived the swell was 3-4ft with a few bigger sets thrown in every now and again. Padang Left was firing on all cylinders with consistent 5ft barrels rolling in. Our own instructor Samo Nias shredded it showing the beginners how its done. With the rip still strong our beginners struggled a little with a few rip-caught rescues performed. There was plenty of white wash to go around with a few beginners advancing over the past few sessions at the same break. Some have gone onto hard top and are mastering their pop-ups and turns. Understanding a break and its go and no-go areas is a whole other side to surfing that seems to take a lot longer than just the ‘paddle and pop up’ routine. With many guys drifting into the rip when paddling in and not understanding why they weren’t going anywhere, our instructors gave everyone a good run-down on the do’s and don’ts at Padang. With the high tide still low we took the guys to Jimbaran Bay this afternoon for some fresh seafood and beach lazing. One session per day is giving the guys a chance to re-charge their batteries and really soak up the relaxed Balinese lifestyle. They shouldn’t get too comfortable though- the tides are always changing!
